At Kenilworth Union Church the Pastoral Prayer’s title is *Prayers of the People and is authored and delivered by the liturgist every Sunday at divine worship. The prayer contains thanksgivings, supplications, and intersessions that are current spiritual needs of the church, the community, the nation, and globally. This popular prayer is posted weekly to pray sincerely in hopes to offer comfort to the people being prayed for as well as the person praying.

The Unnamed, VI: The Woman Who Kept Working Late at the Office

Anyway there she stands in all her shame. They say, "Jesus, in the law Moses tells us to stone a cheater like this; what do you think we ought to do?" Jesus just bends down and doodles in the sand with his finger. No one knows what he was writing. Perhaps he was just buying time while he tried to think of an appropriate response. Or maybe he was deliberately ignoring them, refusing to participate in this unseemly little charade staged by morality police who had absolutely no interest whatsoever in the law of Moses. By the way, this is neither here nor there, but did you ever notice that this is the only time in the New Testament where Jesus writes anything down? The most important figure in history, and so far as we know, he left nothing written behind, at least not that survived him. This is the only thing he ever writes, and he writes it in the sand of that Temple courtyard; hours later, when everybody leaves, the wind will wash it away forever.

Smart, reasonable people can and will reach different conclusions about the consequences of historical events and God’s involvement in them. This is why some of you won’t agree with me that God’s word for today is a call to be like the Witch of Endor: Become an agent of God’s mercy in an unfair world. This text brings us up against the limits of our human intellect and points toward wisdom that lives on the margins and edges. Could it be that knowledge might one day be needed by the very people who, like Saul, banned it? Throughout history there have been people, many of them women like the medium at Endor, who possess a kind of wisdom or insight that puts them in conflict with the establishment.

The Unnamed, IV: Pharaoh’s Daughter

This is one of those classic tales you find in every age in every land among every people in every language where the oppressed humiliate the oppressor. In these prototypical tales, the enslaved are smarter and craftier than the powerful, like in Hogan’s Heroes where the POW’s keep outwitting the Nazis who are supposed to be in charge. Or the Roadrunner who is supposed to be prey is way shrewder than the Coyote who is supposed to be the predator. Or did you ever see that great film Django Unchained where Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington make fools of Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel Jackson? With these kinds of stories, the disenfranchised poke a finger in the eye of their oppressors with their infernal whips and chains.
