Kenilworth Union Church Youth Ministry is now offering Service & Leadership Certificate Courses for high school students. The courses are suitable for all high school teens serving in Music Ministry, in Sunday School, in Worship, at Youth Groups, in IMPACT, with almost all course components being customizable to the participating students’ call to serve.

Service & Leadership Certification distinguishes a high schooler’s efforts toward understanding and practicing service and leadership and is a tangible honor that can help open doors to opportunity at the church, in the community, and beyond.

Students can earn three levels of Service & Leadership Certification by completing largely hands-on and flexible coursework. Each level includes minimal class learning coupled with experiential learning in inspirational leadership and hands-on service and is supported with a mentor relationship. Enrollment is open all year and there is no time limit to complete coursework. Classes are part of each level and will be offered several times throughout the year.

Service & Leadership 101 Certificate Course (SL101), which lays the fundamentals for understanding and practicing service and leadership in the faith community and beyond.

Celebration of Service Class meets in two parts at 11 a.m.  Sundays, Class 1—October 17 and Class 2—November 7 in the Church Library. This class series will repeat at a new time in December on Sundays at noon in the library. Class 1—December 5 and  Class 2—December 12.  No registration required. Both classes are required learning for SL101.

Service & Leadership 201 Certificate Course (SL201), builds upon the foundations laid in SL101, expanding knowledge and practice of servant leadership.

Celebration of Submission Class meets in two parts at 11 a.m. Sundays, Class 1—December 5 and Class 2—December 12 in the Church Library.

Just a note, all high school teens are invited to any Service & Leadership Class, whether enrolled for certification or not. Each two-class series examines the chapter in Richard Foster’s “Celebration of Discipline”  Level 101: “Service”; Level 201: “Submission”; and Level 301: TBD

SL101 is the pre-requisite for Level 2 and Level 3 certifications. Classes for SL301 in February. Enrollment for levels 2 and 3 open before classes begin.

All three levels are built around four modules

  • Learn: two-class series
  • Inspire: experience leadership in Children, Youth, or Music Ministries
  • Serve: hands-on volunteer service at or with the Church
  • Connect: with a Church Mentor

My prayer is that these courses draw young people more deeply into their commitment to understand and live according to what Jesus reminded his disciples in Matthew 20, when he told them “Whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant.”

May it be so with us as it was with them.
