John begins his Gospel with that image, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”

Being even more specific, Jesus says it of himself, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

We are people of the light because the light of the universe burns inside us.

Today marks the day we recommit ourselves to the idea of democracy with an election placing power into each citizen to light a way forward for all. Even though rancor from factions within each party demand the limelight, we can remain steadfast in our belief that every person and vote will bring about a stronger nation. Every one of us can light a candle against the darkness.
