October 8—Gratitude Daily Devotional

Jane Williamson

My family just returned from a wonderful, albeit chilly, annual apple picking weekend in Michigan. Every year, we gather up more apples than we can possibly consume, swept up in the glory of Crane’s Orchards in Fennville. This year was no exception, except that it was particularly cold which kept us moving quickly through the rows of Mutsu, Empire, Ida Red, and Jonathan.

We returned to the house, built a roaring fire, watched football, roasted marshmallows for s’mores and, of course, made apple crisp. Almost felt normal. With all that has happened in the past six months, this simple but important family tradition feels all the more special, and for that I am truly grateful.

While we were there, we sang this childhood prayer. Some of you will find it familiar.

Let Us Pray:

The Lord is good to me,
And so I thank the Lord.
For giving me the things I need
The sun and the rain and the apple seed.

The Lord is good to me.

Amen.

Perhaps you can list 2–3 things, people, or aspects
of your life for which you are thankful today.

Be a writer for gratitude: Kenilworth Union Church invites you to become part of a gratitude journey, diverse members within the church will author these devotions. Find out more here.
