Scripture: Matthew 18:21–22
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Spiritual Practice: Forgiveness
We pray every week: “forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors.” Or is it trespasses? Or sins? It’s all terribly confusing.

What isn’t confusing is the call to forgiveness. Every week, across Christendom, we’re all on the same page about forgiveness. God, you forgive me. I will forgive others. That’s the jist of it. No more, no less.

We may forgive imperfectly, humanly, but God is with us along the way, within our imperfections, our frustrations, our inabilities, our stuckness. When we cannot forgive, when we refuse to forgive, when we stumble and struggle, God’s forgiveness leads us on.

Is there someone in your life who you need to forgive? Is there someone who needs to forgive you?

Daily Prayer
God, we trust you
You walk the way with us.
You forgive us,
And guide us toward forgiveness
In all our relationships.
Lead us, in trust,
Amen.
