Spiritual Practice: Welcoming Prayer
For Adele Ahlberg Calhoun the spiritual practice of a welcoming prayer means “to welcome God into every part of my life, body, circumstances and relationships.” A welcoming prayer, then, isn’t a wordy prayer full of well thought out proclamations about God’s presence. Instead this is a style of prayer that acknowledges and greets the spirit of God in everything.

It is a prayer like that of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem, “The world is charged with the grandeur of God.” A welcoming prayer is a spiritual perspective that everywhere, everything, sees and knows the presence of God.

May you welcome God, all in all.

Daily Prayer
Sunrise, Lord, I greet you.
Golf course, praise God.
Spin class, I see you God.
Math class, God you are here.
Long drive, God be near.
That quiet moment before a “big event,” God I sense your presence.
The loud dance floor (don’t we miss that crowded place?), God I am here, be with me.
Hospital room, Spirit of the living God, yes.
Evening routine, receive me, God.
Rest, glorious rest, breathe within me.
