Katie Snipes Lancaster

O give thanks to the Lord, for God is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 118:1

Fork down hay
for the white-face steers.
Sit in the hay mow door
watching the horses graze,
chewing myself a dry clover sprig.

Long day over.
No evening plans.
Dust motes drift
on the ambering light.
Pigeons flap and coo in the rafters.

First star now
low in the east.
Sweat cools
and crusts on my face,
muscles lean back on their bones

and all thoughts heal down
to a low whistling.
—Charles Goodrich, “Evening Star”

We remember last night, O God of Dusk.
We remember the star, the cloud, the fog.
We remember the rain, the warmth, the cool breeze.
We remember the rest, the dream, the restlessness.
We remember the night, O Lunar Love,
And we awaken now to the sun in the east,
To the sun on the horizon, to the possibility of what is ahead this day.
Be with us in all we face. Be with us, O God, Amen.
