We are so grateful that Kenilworth Union’s Children’s Ministry has been highlighting Christopher House this year. Thank you so much for generously contributing to Christopher House through the Children’s Chapel offering and by participating in the ongoing diaper drive. So far, your children have collected $1200 through their weekly chapel and Christmas Pageant offering! The Children’s Chapel offering continues through May.
Kenilworth Union Church Christopher House Co-Liaison

Christopher House is an agency that helps support Chicago families experiencing poverty. One in three children in Chicago grow up in poverty and families supported by Christopher House have an average annual income of less than $19,000. The agency is committed to helping break the cycle of poverty by providing families with tools, goals and education they need to succeed. They offer quality early childhood daycare at three Chicago locations as well as an award-winning K—8 grade school, both of which help provide the kids with a great start and then bolster their chances of succeeding in their future educational endeavors.

Our church has developed a strong relationship with Christopher House over the past several years and we support them through several activities. Leading this activity, this year we sponsored 112 (or over a quarter of all) Christopher House families this Christmas. We are so blessed to have such a thoughtful and giving congregation.

The money your children have faithfully collected helps fill Christopher House’s food pantry with food, toiletries, and various other necessary supplies. Did you know that diapers, toiletries, and household supplies are not covered by food stamps? So far, we have delivered two car loads of diapers, wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, and household cleaning supplies thanks to your generosity! Please keep bringing in diapers and wipes. Your contributions are so very much appreciated and needed. One of our Kenilworth Union families even asked their Christmas party attendees to bring diapers in lieu of a host gift! Many of you chose to support a Christopher House family with Christmas presents and grocery gift cards!

We would also like to have a book drive of new books in February. We would be collecting for early childhood through eighth grade reading level. Every March, Christopher House holds a reading rally and they like to send the kids home with new books to stock their home libraries.

Thank you so much for your generous continuing support of Christopher House! You and and your children have been making a meaningful and lasting impact on families experiencing poverty.

Activity: Remember Your Baptism

The Sunday after Epiphany is Baptism of the Lord Sunday when we recall Jesus’s baptism in the Jordan river, described in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. It is a week to remember or to look forward to our own baptisms. These videos, one from the Presbyterian Church USA and one from the United Methodist Church are helpful in understanding the rich meaning in God’s gift of baptism.

Share the stories of your family members’ baptisms this week. Then pray together:

Dear God, thank you for the gift of water that reminds us of your love. When we take a drink, when we take a bath, when we wash our dishes, when we catch a glimpse of the lake, help us to know that you are with us. We belong to you. Amen.
