Third Grade Bible Milestone

The Reverend Christine V. Hides

For over sixty years, third graders at Kenilworth Union have been asked to “learn scripture by heart,” or as the book of Proverbs says, write God’s word upon their heart. The five scripture passages that third graders will learn are ones they will encounter over and over throughout their lives: the Ten Commandments, the 23 Psalm, the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and Jesus’ Greatest Commandment. The Third Grade Bible year honors the gifts and skills of our third graders, welcomes them into a tradition that goes back generations, and gives them a unique, lifelong connection with scripture.

Thanks to the support of the entire congregation, 23 third graders have been faithfully writing scripture on their hearts this school year, despite the challenges of Covid-19. We met online and outdoors, we used videos and mailed home supplies. These faithful third graders practiced diligently to reach this milestone. On Sunday, they will receive their own personalized Bible, the generous gift of the Allen C. Menke family.

In Children and Family  Ministry, we teach that “The Bible is a record of faith, a source of values, a witness to the person and power of Jesus Christ. It contains enduring truths that remain relevant today. We develop opportunities to experience and imagine how each person’s story intertwined with God’s story held within the Bible and Christian tradition. We equip older children and youth with the tools needed to read the Bible and to listen to how God’s word speaks to our lives today.”

And so, we invite you to worship in the sanctuary which is livestreamed at 10 a.m. where Bibles will be presented. This is just one of the ways that this congregation lives into our promise to nurture the faith of children entrusted to our care.
