What a joy to share that next week we will once again gather for Children’s Day, a beloved tradition at Kenilworth Union Church for more than 70 years where third graders who have learned scripture by heart receive a personalized Bible. Thanks be to God for these young people and a year of growing in God’s love and grace this program year.
Perhaps you remember that at the beginning of this school year we were just trying to figure out how to regather with many COVID precautions. Creativity was the key to resuming traditions. We met outside for Sunday School for three months, we wore masks and stayed distanced. Our goal was to register 140 kids.
December arrived with hope that Christmas would be another opportunity to resume normal traditions but the Omicron surge necessitated more pivots. Drawing deep from the wells of creativity we hosted our second live nativity indoors because of the weather.
Throughout the year, we gradually became able to congregate together in Schmidt Chapel, to take part in some beloved traditions like “Picturing God” and “The World Jesus Knew”, and we started a few new traditions too. We even surpassed our goal and welcomed 180 children to our rosters including 17 visiting families!
We are more grateful than ever to be able to finish the year together on Children’s Day and recognize the growth we all experienced. Please join us on Sunday, May 22 at the 10 a.m. worship to help celebrate the third graders and all that God is doing in our midst.
Though the program year is ending, Children and Family Ministries isn’t over. Join us for VBS the week of June 13 and summer Sunday school for second graders and younger on June 12, 19, and 26. Even if you are out of town you can access a treasure trove of prayers, faith activities, and resources on our CONNECT network. If this private link does not work, please contact Greta Connor to gain access to the CONNECT link. We hope to see you throughout the summer and on our Back to School Blessing Sunday, August 28! Please contact Greta Connor with questions about the Children and Family Ministry program.
