As we observe Memorial Day, we wanted to take an opportunity to update you on the ongoing restoration of the WWI Memorial Windows in the Sanctuary’s Transept. The renowned stained glass studio Associated Crafts & Willet Hauser has been caring for the windows in an intricate restoration process explained in this video below.
Restoring these stained glass windows has involved many steps, including disassembling the individual pieces for cleaning, repairing cracked and broken pieces, and glazing and soldering the windows back together. While the window honoring Lieutenant Manierre Ware is currently viewable in the transept, the windows that memorialize Lt. Franklin Bellows and Lt. Purcell Macklin are still being cared for. Though the historical restoration process is long and detailed, this careful work will ensure that we can honor the memories of these fallen soldiers for generations to come.
