August Summer Update
The purpose of this post is to provide you with a brief update on the summer construction work that began on June 10. Working closely with HKS Architects and Bulley and Andrews Construction the work is progressing well.
The project began with demolition and excavation along the Skokie Ditch where a new retaining wall is being constructed to replace the one that is failing and compromising the north foundation of the Church. We are more than half way through the process and so far we have made great progress.
Additionally the ivy covering the walls of the Church has been removed and minor tuck pointing of damaged stone areas has begun. By taking action we were able to limit the invasiveness of the ivy before it had done material damage to the stone. The exterior of the church will be pressure washed to clean the stone. We are also installing a new flat roof that will remedy multiple leaks in the sanctuary and Church. Damaged and broken flashing and gutters are being replaced. Additional damage from leaks will be fixed from the interior of the building in mid-August. We have also begun installing 14 high efficiency rooftop HVAC units, making window and enclosure repairs, waterproofing the manse and church basements, and installing an automatic door on the main Church entrance. We will have a temporary door leading into the sanctuary for a week when the existing door is off being refinished. We are adding insulation to the sanctuary where we can to improve the operating efficiency of the building which will result in year over year energy savings.
For those of you that have been to Church recently, you have seen that a fence has been constructed around the manse for safety reasons. The church remains open as usual.
All of this work is infrastructure in nature and necessary for the future integrity of the Church and manse foundation. The benefits to the operations, function, and usability of the buildings will pay dividends down the road. We anticipate having all work finished by early September to kick off the new church year.
