Patrick Hamilton (1504–1528) known as the first martyr of the Scottish Reformation. St. Andrews professor Hamilton learned Luther’s teaching at the age of 24 in 1523 (6 years after Wittenberg). There’s a mosaic of Hamilton’s initials in the pavement where he was burned at the stake. If you step on the ‘PH’, you’ll fail your exam. George Wishart (1513–1546) was confident and mentor to John Knox. Both powerful teachers were early Protestant Reformers in Scotland and Reformer heroes.

While viewing the 12th century ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral there is an impressive feeling of how magnificent this church was. The complex still dominates this spectacular seaside town and former royal burgh. Even in ruins the scale of this church is stunning. In the past, thousands of ancient pilgrims made their way every year to the cathedral, where St. Andrew’s relics were kept until the Reformation. Today, St. Andrews is better known as the home of golf, religion, and the famous university where Prince William met Kate.
