Our kids (ages 6 and 3) have returned to school. Our daughter’s preschool meets entirely outdoors, even in bad weather, and the first week of school it was in the 50s and rained almost every day. Still, she was greeted with such warmth daily, and she learned how to make mud pies, discovered what happens to paint when it gets wet, and saw late-summer flowers blossom in the rain.

Our son’s first-grade teacher has managed to already turn their classroom into a warm, inviting place, even with masks and desks distanced six feet apart. The restrictions she is facing go against everything she normally would be doing, but her ability to make the best of this situation makes our son excited for school every day.

We are grateful for educators, who so purely love and care for children, and whose willingness to pivot and adapt is inspirational. We are grateful for children, who have modeled how to continue to find joy even when it’s hard.

God,
thank you for showing us
time and again that
even if we are forced
to take an unexpected turn,
you are still there with us.
Amen.
