I love early mornings. Enveloped by the still darkness and the sureness of dawn, time seems to stretch. On Sundays, during these covid times, I have made it a habit to tune in to a 6 a.m. radio program, With Heart and Voice, that plays sacred and organ music.

This past Sunday, with my little ear buds piping a church anthem, I walked to the beach, expecting almost no human encounters due to the early hour. To my surprise, set against the sunrise, were a dozen cars and a small Jewish congregation. They gathered, a week before the Jewish holy days, for a special service to “pray for forgiveness”.

They welcomed me to stay. I stood in the back, mask on, and listened to the call and response led by the rabbi. It was in Hebrew but it did not matter, the spirit, the peace, and the presence of everything around were universal.

Let Us Pray:

May we always encounter peace in the presence of the unexpected.
Amen.
