Quiet Christmas, Tuesday, December 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary and Livestream
The first Christmas party at Kenilworth Union this year was actually in November, that first week after Thanksgiving, and it feels like joyful crowds have been gathering for festive celebrations ever since. Your calendar may be cheerfully full of galas, jamborees, and holiday gift exchanges, each one lifting you up as you remember and recognize the power of being together.
Knowing we have robustly made room for creative energetic joy, we also seek to make room for the more contemplative urges within. For some, it is hard to muster Christmas joy: we feel more akin to Scrooge than we’d like. For others, life circumstances make this season impossibly hard and the bells and bobtails making spirits bright seem hollow. And for others still, it is the balance of loud festivity and quiet contemplation that brings you to the sanctuary for Quiet Christmas.
It reminds me that some of the best Christmas carols are either in a minor key or at a slower tempo, bearing our deepest longings and our longest held dreams.
Quiet Christmas is worship of quiet carols, quiet reflections, set in the evening darkness on the cusp of the longest night of the year. You will hear scripture and meditations that carry you toward the manger with gentleness and the possibility of peace. Bring your whole heart, your deepest longings, and the inner urging of a quiet place to meet the God in whom we place our trust this season: Immanuel, God-with-us.
