The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
God of all that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete: Be with us in all that is unfinished, flawed, and fleeting about the lives we bear up to you.
Be with us when we feel undone, when our efforts feel fragmentary, and our efforts falter. Give us humility, unencumbered. Give us an essential endurance through the struggles of this moment. Hold us. Hear us. Mend us. Revive us.
For we come to you in the rush of life, acknowledging the ways that our expectations are out of sync with reality: we find ourselves preoccupied with status, power, and luxury, when you call us toward inexhaustible compassion and enduring generosity.
We find ourselves overlooking what is most important and tying ourselves in knots over what is most distracting. Focus us. Open our eyes. Leave your love unobscured, lift the fog, and restore us so that we might re-tune our lives to the sound of your spirit.
Recalibrate our hearts. Modulate our mindset. When we must tread lightly, establish a gentleness within us. When we must go boldly, grant us courage. When our efforts feel overlooked, strengthen us. When the world overwhelms, connect us to communities of mercy and tenderness.
Where there is impossibility—like 300,000 solders conscripted in Russia—make a way through, open hearts and minds to a deeper peace, a commitment to life even in places of death.
Where there is unrest—like in Iran—mark the path of protest with the hope of real lived change.
Where there is destruction—like in the wake of Hurricane Fiona across Puerto Rico—fortify and reinforce the strength of collective care.
Where there is grief—across the globe as much as in our individual lives—be balm and comfort and reorientation to the saints of light who accompany us all the days of our lives.
Lord, hear our prayer. Christ, hear our prayer. Holy Spirit, hear our prayer. And hear us as we pray the ancient prayer that Jesus teaches us saying, Our Father….Amen.
