Poetry and Prayer—Day 35: April 6

A Brief for the Defense by Jack Gilbert

Despite it all, O God, give us music, give us the faint sound of silence, give us a measure of delight. Despite it all—the sorrow, the illness, the not knowing—give us dawn, give us rest, give us laughter. Despite it all, give us eyes to see the beauty out our window, the courage to risk joy, the fine sunset so full our hearts almost break. Despite it all, let us accept our gladness, O God. Amen.
