We were visiting our son, daughter-in-law and 15-month-old granddaughter Julia in DC to help them move into their new house.
Melissa wanted to go to a service at the National Cathedral and asked if I’d like to go along. We loaded Julia into the stroller with all her paraphernalia, including much needed snacks, and set off.
It was a small service in a balcony area with about 30 people in the congregation.
When it was time for communion, I told Melissa to go ahead—I’d stay with Julia.
After the priest gave communion, he noticed me and kindly came over to offer the communion to me. Then he asked if he could give Julia a wafer.
Of course, I said yes.
She took it and immediately grabbed one of the puff snacks from her stroller tray and handed it to the priest.
He was so touched that he went back to the altar and told everyone that he had been a priest for 30 years but that this was the first time he had ever had a reciprocal communion.
