Joy!  was the theme for our first Sunday of Wondertime—our Summer Sunday school for preschool−first grade children. Each week we explore a new picture book and a messy, outdoor activity. Each week we will send a quick list of super-fun resources for you to try at home—or wherever you are.

Joy-filled book recommendations:

When God Made You  is a joyful celebration of  being created by God. The author, Matthew Paul Turner, found most books about God less exciting and imaginative —so he began to write.

Rattletrap Car,  by Phyllis Root,  is a rhyming tale of resiliency and creativity that finds joy in the midst of mishap. A fun book to read on the way to the beach!

Love, Ruby Lavender, by Deborah Wiles is a short novel about a nine year old girl’s summer adventures—including a chicken rescue! The audio book is great for road trips.

Wonder together: I wonder where you see joy in this story? I wonder what part of this story reminds you about God? I wonder what part of this story is most important.

Free! Summer ideas that spark joy:

• • Use your sidewalk chalk to spread messages of joy around the neighborhood.
  • Change up your prayer routine with bubbles: have each person share what they are thankful for and then let the wind lift the prayers up as you blow bubbles.
  • Got a summer song? Turn up the volume and have a family dance party!
  • Be on the hunt for joy in the world. Snap a picture of joy and share with me, we’d love to share some images on social media.
