Spiritual Practice: Mentoring
Today is Confirmation Sunday, a day that cannot come about without mentors (livestream Confirmation Sunday worship today starting at 8:30 a.m.) It takes dozens of listening adults to make it to this day. In fact, maybe it’s more than that, because I trust that the parents of confirmands themselves have mentors, people who open them up to be authentic parents, family members, community leaders, and people of faith. We all need a mentor. And, in turn, we all have chances to be mentors.

I love this quote about mentoring, “We need examples, relationships, hands-on experience, support and empowering. We need mentors. In Christian theology the Holy Spirit is the mentoring nuclear reactor of transformation. And one of the tools in the Holy Spirit’s hands is the body of Christ” (Adele Ahlberg Calhoun). In other words, we (the body of Christ) can do God’s work of transformation when we become mentors and when we seek out mentors.

Who is your mentor? How can you connect with them this week? Who are you mentoring? What can you do to be part of the “mentoring nuclear reactor of transformation” that allow them to stretch their mind, dream big seemingly impossible dreams, and seek after God?

Daily Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit, come.
Draw us into your presence.
Do not let us isolate ourselves.
Draw us into relationship.
Give us mentors who stretch our mind,
Who hear our hopes,
Who encourage our aspirations.
Allow us to listen to you,
And allow us to listen to one another
For the sake of your holy transformation.
Amen.
