Scripture: Psalm 102:2
Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call!
Spiritual Practice: Face-to-Face Connection
French poet Victor Hugo says, “To love another person is to see the face of God.” But what about seeing the face of another person? Does that put us in touch with the love of God? After a year of seeing so few of you face to face, everytime I do see you, I sense that deep abiding love of God. Maybe this is true for you, too. That God loves us by connecting us to one another, and that there is something truly beautifully deep about that face to face connection.
For years, we’ve known the value of face to face connection. The digital era may have first been ushered in by the telephone, or the telegraph. But truly being in the same room can dial down the anxiety and ramp up the connection (or, maybe at times, can let emotions fly, let’s not get too idyllic about the parameters of connecting face to face).
All I know is that there is a gift, a deep spiritual gift, awaiting us when we see one another face to face, especially if we are open and watching for that unfolding presence of God. I’m whatever ways it is possible, open yourself anew to the presence of God at that sacred boundary between you and another.
Daily Prayer
God, open is anew
Connect us to one another
And in doing so,
Attune us to your sacred witness
As we gather.
Amen.
