Scripture: John 18:38
“What is truth?” Pilate asked.

Spiritual Practice: Truth Telling
Have you ever seen someone fudge the stats? Or give into the “sin of omission”? Or dress up a lie as the truth? We live in a world where so called “alternative facts” are touted as the new normal, and the very truthiness of our shared existence is at stake. Maybe there has never been a time when “the truth (and nothing but the truth)” has been the norm. It is a question that goes back to Pontius Pilate, even, when Jesus is on trial before his state sanctioned execution. Committing to the truth is an ancient, vexing, weighty spiritual obligation.

Is there a place in your life where you need to commit again to the truth? What about within the institutions you serve? Where might “we” as a nation or a community commit in a new way to truth telling? And what is spiritual about telling the truth?

Daily Prayer
God, weave us together with honesty.
An ancient indwelling of your truth.
Build a net of love and forthrightness between us,
And let us commit again to a truth-telling way of life.
Amen.
