Every week in Sunday school we light the chapel candle to remind us that God’s light and God’s love are with us. At the end of chapel we snuff the candle out, and as the smoke from the candle floats into the room, I say “We change the light to remind us that God’s love goes with us as we start a new week.” Each week one of the kids exclaims, “not only next week but God’s love always goes with us!” It is encouraging to hear the kids are listening carefully and thinking about what is said in Sunday school.

The past five weeks of hearing parables, kids have been processing “who is the good shepherd?” and “who is the sower?” Another big question they thought about after the good Samaritan parable was “who is your neighbor?” These are substantial topics for kids (and adults) that extend well beyond the Sunday school hour and hopefully into discussions at  home. Just like the parable of the mustard seed, it is our hope that the seeds sown in Sunday school will grow roots in faith.
