Scripture
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. — Matthew 11:28
Wisdom
Our lives are full. There are things to do, people to meet, activities to pursue. We want to be fully occupied, to know that because we are busy people something important is happening in our lives. And if we are not occupied then we are at least preoccupied—filled with concern about things that have not yet come about or have already come about. We fill our inner space with worry about things that might happen and guilt about things that have already happened. And beneath our worry and our guilt there is a deep fear of empty spaces. When we create an empty space, we make room for something to happen to us that we cannot predict, something that might be really new and lead us to places we would rather not go (John 21:15–19). This is where discipline in the spiritual life becomes important. —Henri Nouwen, A Spirituality of Living, 2012
Prayer
Undo our worry, release our guilt, empty us of fear, create space for what is new, and lead us into a future of hope O God of this day and the next. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
