Scripture
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power. —Daniel 2:23

Wisdom
To acknowledge our ancestors means we are aware that we did not make ourselves, that the line stretches all the way back, perhaps to God; or to Gods. We remember them because it is an easy thing to forget that we are not the first to suffer, rebel, fight, love, and die. The grace with which we embrace life in spite of the pain, the sorrow, is always a measure of what has gone before. —Alice Walker, Revolutionary Petunias.

Prayer
We remember O God. We remember those who knit us together in womb and wisdom. We see the line stretching back through unseen generations. We are not our own, but we belong to the in/visible saints of light who embrace us, who mend and comfort us, who stir and guide us. We remember O God. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
