Scripture
The Lord has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. —Micah 6:8
Wisdom
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
—Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus
Prayer
Give me the deep breath of freedom O God. Let the glow of welcome be my guide. And celebrating independence, let us listen to the whisper of lady liberty who speaks again in a new age the words of old, “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” May her words echo off this day. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
Happy Independence Day, there is no Mid-Day Prayer today, we’ll see you next Tuesday, July 11.
