Scripture
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” —Matthew 14:31
Wisdom
Author Madeleine L’Engle recalls a question she received following a lecture at a well-known Christian college. “Do you believe in God without any doubts,” the student queried. To which L’Engle responded, “I believe in God with all my doubts.” In reflecting on her journey of faith, L’Engle asserted that “those who believe they believe in God, but without passion in the heart, without anguish of mind, without uncertainty, without doubt, and even at times without despair, believe only in the idea of God, and not in God.” In a similar fashion theologian Paul Tillich claimed that doubt is an essential part of faith. Tillich believed that if your experience of faith doesn’t provoke moments of doubt, then you aren’t taking your faith seriously. —as quoted in Bruce Epperly’s Faith in a Time of Pandemic
Prayer
Let me love you with all my doubts, O God. Let me find you within the gift of not knowing. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
