Scripture
Take care that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. —Deuteronomy 6:12
Wisdom
Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.
And overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.
While poverty persists, there is no true freedom. —Nelson Mandela, The Campaign to Make Poverty History. London: February 3, 2005
Prayer
Let the values of the world be brought in line with your vision: where there is poverty, give justice; where there is slavery, give freedom; where there is injustice give dignity and a way through. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
