Scripture
God called to Moses out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. —Exodus 3:4–5
Wisdom
In Greek religion, from which the word mysticism comes to us, the ‘myste’ were those initiates of the ‘mysteries,’ who were believed to have received the vision of god, and with it a new and higher life. When the Christian Church adopted this term it adopted too, its original meaning. The Christian mystic therefore is one for whom God and Christ are not merely objects of belief, but living facts experimentally known first hand; and mysticism for the believer becomes, in so far as they respond to its demands, a life based on this conscious communion with God. —Evelyn Underhill, Mystics of the Church
Prayer
Call to us, O God. From within the ordinary, let there arise a sense of your spirit, a trust, an experience, a felt spark. Give us your presence, a gift. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
