Scripture
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. —Philippians 2:12
Wisdom
Why 300,000 varieties of beetles? The great English geneticist J.B.S. Haldane was once cornered by a distinguished theologian who asked him what inferences one could draw, from a study of the created world, as to the nature of its Creator. Haldane answered, “An inordinate fondness for beetles.” —David Quammen, Natural Acts: A Sidelong View of Science and Nature
Prayer
Divine Love, a love magnified by your inordinate fondness for beetles, we are befuddled by the unwarranted, unnecessary abundance of this planet. Just our walk from here to there means passing by another flock of birds, another grove of trees, another hill of ants camouflaged beneath the sidewalks. Let our spirts come alive as we meditate on the beauty of the earth. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
