Scripture
No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.  —Matthew 5:15

Wisdom
Despair and hope are inseparable. One can never understand what hope is really about unless one wrestles with despair. The same is true with faith. There has to be some serious doubt, otherwise faith becomes merely a dogmatic formula, an orthodoxy, a way of evading the complexity of life rather than a way of engaging honestly with life. —Cornel West, The Cornel West Reader, 2000

Prayer
Do not let me toss aside the complexity of this life, O God. Do not let me rummage through the doubt and struggle, searching only for the sunny days. Let me wrestle, so that I might engage honestly with this strange and fragile life I live. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
