Scripture
O Lord, God of my salvation,
    at night, when I cry out before you,
let my prayer come before you;
    incline your ear to my cry.

For my soul is full of troubles,
    and my life draws near to Sheol. —Psalm 88:1–3

Wisdom
The unpredictable and circuitous nature of grief offers a paradoxical, if unsought, freedom and grace. If sorrow gives us no straightforward or prescribed road, no standard manual for its healing, then we are not bound to travel it by a way that does not fit for us. —Jan Richardson, Sparrow

Prayer
Unbind us from the expectations of this life, God, and give us freedom to travel less straightforward roads, where the fullness of our experience might meet the fullness of your grace. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
