Scripture
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’ —John 8:12
Wisdom
I will be 80 on my next birthday, and as you approach that extraordinary age you can’t help but think about the end of your life, obviously, and what, if anything happens next. Of all that you lose, all that you have lost already, in the way of people you have loved, places, things. But that’s not the end of it, I do believe. I wrote a novel about an old saint, an 11th-century English saint named Godrick, from whose mouth came the words that have become precious to me. I put them in his mouth, but I don’t feel that way. It is as if he put them in my ear. Let me end with that: ‘What’s lost is nothing to what’s found. And all the death that ever was, set next to life, would scarcely fill a cup.’ —Frederick Buechner, Washington National Cathedral, April 5, 2006
Prayer
Fill my cup with the light of life. Amen. —The Reverend Dr. Katie Snipes Lancaster
