Kenilworth Union Church and Lurie Children’s Hospital Support Gender Inclusivity at “Creating Space at the Table”

On Monday, September 24, Kenilworth Union Church and Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital will team together for an evening supporting transgender and gender expansive individuals at “Creating Space at the Table.” The event features Abigail Muldoon, who works with Lurie Children’s Division of Adolescent Medicine in their Education and Outreach Initiative, and Hadeis Safi, Lurie’s Community Outreach Coordinator, connecting with attendees about transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, and sharing what can be done to support them.

The evening seeks to create better understanding of the gender spectrum with the goal of building empathy, kindness and respect and eliminating bullying. The high rate of attempted suicide by gender diverse people (41%) indicates a dire need for greater public awareness and support, as well as gender-inclusive spaces to welcome them; both are needs that Kenilworth Union aims to fulfill alongside Lurie Children’s.

Attendees will discuss key terms, receive an overview of best practices on being an ally to transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, and will feel more confident about the positive support they can bring to those who need it.

The session, which is jointly sponsored by Adult Education at Kenilworth Union and A Joyful Noise Preschool, will be held from 7–8:30 p.m. in the Culbertson Room at the church, 211 Kenilworth Avenue in Kenilworth.
