Reflection: Lying between the opaque and the obvious,” parables, like poetry, need to be interpreted, says Fred Craddock. When we find beauty and meaning in poetry, we take a picture and share it with a friend. We mark it for later, leaving the book lying open on the growing stack on the bedside table.

So it is when we encounter Jesus, the Word made flesh, the illuminated presence known in the poetic prologue of John’s Gospel, “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world (1:9).” We encounter the sacred in the poetry of a sunset, the sparkle of a loved one’s eye, maybe even the ordinary blessing of a bulb lighting our way. We see. We interpret. We stand in wonder.
