Halloween can be both fun and a little scary especially for young children. Blessing the day is a way to remember that God is with us even in the scariest times. Halloween evolved out of the religious tradition of All Hallows Eve which is known today as the eve of All Saints’ Day—the day the church remembers the faithful people of God who have entered life eternal. Christians live in the hope that God’s love is more powerful than anything even death.

Holy God, at Halloween we remember that you are the ruler of all things—even those that make us fearful. You delight in our laughter and play. Bless us today as we dress up and trick or treat. Let the joy of today be a sign that your love reigns over all things in heaven and earth. Amen.

Remembering the Saints
All Saints’ Day is an opportunity to remember loved ones in a variety of ways—the lighting of candles, the ringing of bells, and prayer. If your family has recently lost a loved one I recommend two books: The Memory Box: a book about grief is a story of a child gathering together keepsakes to remember a loved one. A Little Blue Bottle is a tender picture book that allows children to articulate their grief remembering that God keeps track of all of our sorrow.
