Remember: When we are invited to the communion table, we hear Jesus’ words, “Do this in remembrance of me.” We are a remembering-faith. We remember and retell the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection because (1) Jesus asked us to and (2) it deepens how we know and encounter the divine in real life today.

The word remember reminds me that our ancestors in faith are critical to who we are as Christians. What if Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me,” but no one remembered he said that? Our faith is passed down generation to generation. Those who went before us, who themselves had embodied, lived experiences of the Living God tell us of their encounters in order to strengthen our journey, in order to reveal to us the possibility of divine encounter today. Our faith is written on the hearts of our ancestors, and in that way written in our DNA in a way that is intimate and incarnational.

Praying the Alphabet:
Repair us, O God,
With ritual and remembering,
Reimagine and rewrite your love in our hearts.
Do not refuse us.
For we reach for you and are recalibrated.
We receive you, rooted again
your presence rising up in our midst.
Renew us.
Reclaim us.
Redeem us.
Amen.
