AJN Preschool Humble Design Service Project

Forever Relying On God

Last month, as part of the A Joyful Noise Preschool (AJN) Parent Board’s community outreach efforts, a group of 14 parent volunteers from our school traveled to the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago to assist in transforming what had previously been a nearly empty house into a fully-furnished, warm and welcoming home custom designed to accommodate the tastes and needs of a small family, a single mother and her five year old son.

The family had moved into the home a few months prior and still lacked just about everything beyond two air mattresses on the floor. Our AJN Board was connected with this family, recently emerging from homelessness, through Humble Design, an incredible nonprofit with a mission to provide these services to veterans and families making their way out of homelessness. We were given the opportunity to interview our client to ask about her family’s interests and priorities, and we reviewed photos and floor plans to determine how to best create a home that worked well specifically for the family.

Through Humble Design’s wonderful infrastructure and guidance and the incredible generosity of our AJN community, we gathered trucks full of donated furniture and clothing, and pooled our monetary donations to purchase home furnishings, decorative items, books, and a pantry full of nonperishable food.

Our team spent a full day on site with members of the Humble Design team unloading trucks, assembling furniture, cleaning, hanging artwork, framing family photos, and more (including helping to set up a small extra room as a hair salon that the mother hopes to start using as they work to get back on their feet!). At the end of the day our team was privileged to witness the mother walk into her new home for the first time, and happy tears flowed all around.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone that contributed to this amazing project!
