What Two Decades Walking the Bible Taught Me About Life, Land, Love, and Camels

At a time when religion can often be a source of division, a group of faith communities in Wilmette and Kenilworth continue to meet in worship, learning, and social action. Congregation Sukkat Shalom, First Congregational Church of Wilmette, and Kenilworth Union Church are jointly sponsoring a lecture by acclaimed author Bruce Feiler.

The November 4 event, which is open to the public, aims to unite the community through learning about Feiler’s decades of travel and the numerous cultures he has immersed himself in. As the writer-presenter of the PBS miniseries Walking the Bible, Feiler has an international audience, but this evening promises to be a more intimate venue.

Feiler, the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, such as Walking the Bible and Abraham, blends his knowledge from his travels with an optimistic outlook that audiences continually find inspiring and meaningful.

Rabbi Samuel Gordon of Sukkat Shalom shares that “This will be our third visit by Bruce Feiler. He is an acclaimed writer and speaker, and his topic will speak to people of all faiths. These annual lectures bring together our community members in joint learning and fellowship, and help all of us gain respect and understanding of our traditions and histories.”

The lecture will be held at Congregation Sukkat Shalom, 1001 Central Avenue in Wilmette, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 4. Ahead of this main presentation, Rabbi Gordon and the Reverend Van Slyke will lead two classes at First Congregational Church of Wilmette on Feiler’s teachings. The classes will be on October 4 and 11 at 7 p.m. and interested participants can RSVP to sukkatshalom@sukkatshalom.org.
