A Back to School Prayer

The Reverend Christine V. Hides

The new school year arrives with both excitement and uncertainty. Prayers for this milestone ground us in God’s hope and grace, reminding us of God’s loving presence in each and every moment of our lives. Below is a prayer inspired by the familiar structure of Psalm 23, the subject of our current sermon series. Use this responsive prayer at home on your first day or any day.

Be sure to join your church family for a special in person Back to School Blessing at both 8:30 and 10 a.m. worship on Sunday August 29., complete with SWAG and popsicles after worship.

A Back to School Prayer Inspired by Psalm 23, by the Rev. Christine V. Hides

Lord, you are my teacher and my guide; you provide for my learning.

You lead me to the places of health and growth: you lead me outside to play and rest.

You bring joy to my life: you show me the best way even when I am not sure.

Yes, when I am overwhelmed with homework or anxiety, even when I mess up a test, or am starting at a new school, I will try not to be afraid:

For you are with me.

You are my security and the source of my inner strength.

Your hope is for all people—even those I find it hard to get along with—to sit around your overflowing table. You get us ready for the bright future you imagine. When I think of your love my heart fills up.

For you are with me.

Surely God, your goodness and mercy will be with me every day from preschool to elementary school, then middle school, high school, and beyond.

Your love is a place I can call home forever.

For you are with me.
