All are Welcome to Worship at Kenilworth Union Church

Kenilworth Union Church is an ecumenical church community. The church gathers to worship in search of God’s guidance and inspiration, and is sent out to love and serve God and others. Independent of any particular denomination, the church’s identity is formed by its devotion to God. The church actively supports outreach efforts; children, youth and family ministries; and caring ministries across all life’s struggles and uncertainties.

Summer Worship from Memorial Day to Labor Day
8:30 a.m. Worship with Communion—Memorial Garden: BYOB (Bring Your Own Chair) During inclement weather worship will be in the Sanctuary
10 a.m. Worship in the Sanctuary—livestream and in person
9:45 a.m. All Ages Summer Sunday School will meet twice a month during the summer on the even dates!

During 8:30 and 10 a.m. worship, childcare is available in classroom 12 for children ages six months through age three. There is no charge for this service but please let Greta Connor know you are coming.

Friends and neighbors gather for Fellowship at 10:45 a.m. in the front yard of church or in the Culbertson Room when weather is inclement. Coffee and cookies will be served with games for the kids.

Additional services are held during Advent and Lent.

Please join us on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. in the sanctuary or via livestream for a brief prayer service when we lift the joys and concerns of members and requests from those who are present. Each week offers a new liturgy as we read through scriptures and hear a brief reflection. All are welcome.

Reminders for Livestream Worship

Internet connectivity can be unpredictable. In the event that a worship livestream is interrupted due to connectivity issues, please remember to check both sites from which we stream (kuc.org/watch and youtube.com/c/kenilworthunionchurch). Worship videos are also available online after the service has ended for you to watch when convenient; check here for our worship library. We apologize for any interrupted livestreams, but we do not expect it to be a recurring issue and are working hard to bring God’s message to you, no matter where you are.

From the Edens Expressway or I-94

Exit at Lake Avenue and drive east about 2¼ miles to Green Bay Road. Turn north (left). Continue to the first stoplight, Kenilworth Avenue. Turn east (right) and continue for about four blocks until reaching the Church on the north side of the street.

From Sheridan Road

There is only one stoplight on Sheridan Road in Kenilworth and this is Kenilworth Avenue. Turn west on Kenilworth Avenue from Sheridan Road and go about two blocks. The Church will be on the north (right) side of the street.

Parking

Kenilworth Union Church has street parking, plus there is construction on Kenilworth Avenue, please arrive early for your event.

Packing for the Journey

I believe that the Sunday School teachers who came up with the Kenilworth Union Church Third Grade Bible lessons 90 years ago also thought of life as a journey. They wanted third graders to be prepared for the trip of a lifetime with God. So they made a scripture packing list so that children in this church would know that God was with them wherever they went and so they would be able to remember God is present in every situation. For generations third graders have learned "The Ten Commandments", "The 23rd Psalm", "The Beatitudes", "The Lord’s Prayer" and "Jesus’ Greatest Commandment". The 1950’s version of the packing list also included Psalms 19 and 100.

The Valley of Lost Things, IV: The Party I Refused to Attend

A lost coin, found. A lost sheep, found. A lost son, found. After each lost thing found, a party. Luke chapter fifteen is simple enough, but it might hold everything we need to know about God. When we are lost, God goes after us. When we are lost, God seeks us until we are found. But here’s today’s question: will the older brother go to the party? Can he bear to celebrate? Jesus spins these fabulous little tales and we’re still thinking of them two thousand years later. We see ourselves in the younger brother. We see ourselves in the older brother. We even see ourselves in the father, watching his sons hurt and be hurt by each other and the world. We know this story is telling us something about ourselves. We intuitively know that we fit within this story. And two thousand years later, this story is still about us, getting lost, and God running out to greet us.

The Valley of Lost Things, III: Lost and Found

Have you noticed that Shakespeare based his magnum opus, King Lear, on the same initial plot device as Jesus’ little parable? Foolishly, a man divides his inheritance to his heirs prematurely, while he is still alive. A man had two sons. A man had three daughters. All our stories begin this way, or most of them, because this is what is most precious to us, and most distressing.
